Insects commonly make appearances at football games. Typically, it is during warmer weather than is predicted for the 2013 Superbowl. The only insects likely to make an appearance are the animated types found in the Superbowl ads. Last year’s (2012) Chevy Sonic commercial featuring insects riding on the grill of car was a hit with entomologists everywhere. Will we have another hit insect ad this year?
One of my favorite ads is the “Tabasco Sauce- Exploding Mosquito” video. A gentleman eating pizza outdoors slathers his pizza with Tabasco Sauce. The bug zapper fails to stop the mosquito which bites the man on his leg. However, his blood is so spicy from the Tabasco Sauce that the mosquito explodes. Of course, the explosion is pure fantasy, but there are systemic drugs that people can take to kill parasites transmitted by mosquitos. Agents such as spicy pepper are not deterrent enough or lethal to mosquitos to be effective for control. The best bet is to use an effective repellent applied to the skin.
Never really thought that bugs were included with Superbowl Sunday, but very interesting that peppers can effectively control mosquito’s.
I never have noticed any Insects on television unless some one was allergic to a Bee and got stug. Its funny how somthing so small can be can be brought to your attention. I will be on the look out for insects on my television now.

I did not notice any Super Bowl 2013 advertisements that had to do with insects. Granted, I probably wouldn’t have noticed anyway. I will be sure from now on to have my insect radar on at all times when I’m watching tv.
Never even crossed my mind how insects could make an appearance at the Super Bowl. However this is very interesting. I wonder if insects have ever effected players while they are playing. Such as mosquito bites or bee stings.
Fire ants have caused games to be postponed until the fire ants were removed.

I had never really noticed bugs used in advertisement until now. I will definitely be on the look out for more funny commercials involving insects.
As an Entomology major, I notice insects all the time on TV. It is comical how something as simple as a commercial or television show can cause a stir among the public. I always enjoy commercials that put the effort into studying the insect before creating the commercial. I am always picking out certain factors, like in the commercial I was looking at the feeding position of the mosquito to decide which genera it could be! Having insects in the media is always interesting to me!
Including insects in commercial shows an attention to detail that many people don’t notice or appreciate. There are many things, in something as simple as a commercial, that you don’t see but someone from a different perspective easily can.
I think making commercials or even movies that have insects in them, help the public understand that insects are a part of life, and are in fact not scary. This Tabasco commercial is just one example of an insect experience that most everyone can relate to, and because of that it makes a better advertisement for the product. Movies such as “A Bug’s Life” also have given the public a better perception of insects, making them seem friendly by having them carry out human activities.
I wonder if there has ever been any trouble with insects during Super Bowls that have been played in enclosed stadiums like the one this year in Louisiana?
Very interesting to see insects and sports come together. I had seen the commercial before and thought it was pretty funny, but had not seen the link to the class before. I think we should all be aware of the importance of insects and how they appear on our daily activities, such as watching TV.
